Florentine New Year
Florence celebrates its New Year on March 25th!
Since the Middle Ages the New year in our city began on March 25th, the feast of the Annunciation.
In 1582 the Gregorian calendar adopted the 1st of January as the first day of the new year. Florence, however, continued to celebrate March 25th until 1749, when the Grand Duke imposed the Gregorian calendar by law.
Since 2000 this ancient tradition has been revived, and every year a historical procession march through the streets of the center to remember when the new year began in spring!
